HTML versus Markdown for AI: what changes?

Markdown can make received website content easier to inspect and process by expressing headings, prose, tables and links without much of the surrounding interface. It is a representation choice, not a guarantee of completeness, accuracy or AI visibility.

Change the representation, preserve the meaning

Imagine a product page with a product name, a regional availability note and three supporting links, surrounded by repeated menus. A useful prepared source retains the product claim, its region qualifier and exact destinations. Removing the qualifier to make the document shorter would make the source worse.

HTML can already be well structured. Markdown does not add missing facts, establish trust or repair an inaccessible source. A conversion that loses table relationships or associates a price with the wrong variant has failed even if the result looks clean.

Extraction and presentation answer different questions

Extraction asks which content and relationships were received and represented. Composition asks how to present that retained information. Optiview can compact equivalent link groups while keeping occurrence evidence available; distinct groups must remain distinct. Compare original output, composed output and diagnostics rather than relying on line counts alone.

An AI-drafted answer is a separate addition. It should have supporting evidence and a review step, not silently become part of the extracted website. Existing FAQ quotations and generated suggestions need visibly different labels.

The request still matters

HTTP supports selecting representations using request preferences such as Accept. A connected Optiview page can return Markdown to an eligible request that explicitly accepts it while normal website traffic receives HTML. The configuration and source eligibility still matter. HTTP content negotiation.

Test the same connected URL with its normal browser request and with Accept: text/markdown. Inspect the actual Content-Type and response body, not just a 200 status. A fallback HTML response is not evidence of successful Markdown delivery.

What to compare on your own page

Choose one page and list its material facts, qualifiers, headings, table relationships and destination URLs before running a preview. Compare them with the prepared source. Record omissions and source-review notices. Treat fewer lines as a presentation metric, not a quality score.

Use the live preview for source inspection and the evidence guide for measurement boundaries. Read what different AI services retrieve before assuming which representation they will receive.
